Volunteers restore neglected footpath linking allotments to the river

A group of volunteers has restored a long-neglected footpath connecting the allotments off Factory Lane to the riverside meadow, reopening a walk that had become impassable after years of overgrowth.

The working party spent two weekends clearing brambles, cutting back overhanging branches and laying new timber steps on the steepest section. A small footbridge over the ditch was also repaired.

A route worth saving

Walkers had gradually stopped using the path as it became waterlogged and choked with growth, and there were fears it would be lost from the map altogether.

  • Around forty metres of new stepped path
  • A repaired footbridge over the drainage ditch
  • Fresh waymarking at both ends of the route

The volunteers say they hope to tackle a second overgrown path next season and are keen to hear from anyone willing to help. Tools and gloves are provided, and no experience is needed beyond a willingness to get muddy.
