A family butcher on the market square is marking fifty years in business this month, having survived the arrival of the supermarkets, several recessions and a steady shift in the way people shop for food.
The shop has been run by the same family across three generations, and still buys much of its meat from farms within the valley. Regulars say it is the personal service and the knowledge behind the counter that keep them coming back.
Fifty years of change
The current owners admit the trade is harder than it once was, but point to a renewed interest in locally sourced food as a reason for cautious optimism.
- Meat sourced from farms across the Colne Valley
- A revived demand for traditional cuts and game in season
- A weekend order service for larger family gatherings
To mark the anniversary the shop is running a series of offers through the month and says it has no intention of slowing down. The next generation, they add, is already learning the trade behind the counter.
